Our Adoption Process

Adopting a dog is an exciting journey! We make it simple and transparent, ensuring both you and your new companion are set up for success.

The 5 Steps to Adoption

From browsing our profiles to the happy homecoming day, here is what you can expect.

01

Explore & Match

Browse our online [Adoptable Dogs Catalog](dogs.php) or visit PawHaven in person. Look for dogs whose personality, energy level, size, and care needs fit your household habits and schedule.

02

Submit Application

Fill out the secure online application form found directly on your chosen dog's profile page. This helps our adoption counselors assess if your residential environment matches the dog's requirements.

03

The Meet & Greet

If your application matches well, we will invite you to the shelter for a face-to-face meet-and-greet! If you have family members or other dogs, they will join to ensure everyone gets along harmoniously.

04

Home Check & Approval

For specific high-energy or large breeds, our staff will conduct a quick virtual or physical home check to confirm backyard fence heights and hazards. Once verified, the application is officially approved!

05

Homecoming Day!

Sign adoption contracts, process the tax-deductible shelter adoption fee ($150-$250, supporting medical funds), receive full medical records, and take your new best friend home along with a starter care kit!

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions? We have answers. Learn more about post-adoption, shelter care, and policies.

How long does the adoption review process take?
Typically, our adoption counselors review submitted applications within 48 to 72 hours. We will reach out via phone or email to update you on status, ask clarifying questions, or schedule a meet-and-greet date.
Can I adopt if I live in an apartment?
Absolutely! Many of our small and medium-sized dogs are perfectly suited for apartment living. We look closely at your exercise routines and how long you plan to leave the dog home alone to ensure they get plenty of stimulation.
What is the shelter return policy?
We understand that life situations change and sometimes placements don't work out. PawHaven has a lifetime returns guarantee — if you can no longer keep a dog adopted from us, we ask that you return them to our shelter so we can keep them safe and find a new home.
Are the dogs house-trained?
Many of our adult residents are house-trained, but shelter stress can cause occasional accidents. Puppies will definitely require training support. We supply complete training booklets and tips to every adoptive parent.
